North American TB-25N Mitchell - North Weald Airfield 23/06/13

 

 

North American TB-25N Mitchell (PH-XXV / 232511 / N5-149), "Sarinah", Duke of Brabant Air Force.

(Royal Netherlands Air Force Historical Flight Foundation), Gilze-Rijen Air Base, The Netherlands.

 

On the 23rd of June I visited North Weald Airfield. I'd heard that the Dutch B-25 Mitchell, 232511

was to spend a couple of hours there on its way home from displaying at the Manston Air Show

the previous day. It was due to arrive at around 10.30 A.M. It turned up about 20 minutes

late, but what an arrival, flying directly over the Control Tower and towards the spectators.

It then did a flypast before landing. The aircraft looked immaculate, apparently it had

just become airworthy again after a period of 3 years under restoration.

 

The departure of the Mitchell will live long in the memory. I'd spoken to the crew of the aircraft

who had asked what we'd like them to do on departure and I'd suggested a top-side flypast,

I hadn't expected them to do it on take-off... awesome!!

 

Departing early afternoon was the RNHF's Hawker Sea Fury T.20, VX281/VL.

Peter Teichman's Supermarine Spitfire PR Mk XI PL965/R arrived not long after.

The aircraft is part of the Hangar 11 Collection based at North Weald.
